The Midnight Sun Season Has Begun in Rovaniemi
Early summer has
arrived in Finnish Lapland, and with it comes one of the region’s most
distinctive natural phenomena: the Midnight Sun. In Rovaniemi, the official
Midnight Sun period begins in early June and continues until early July, when
the sun remains above the horizon around the clock. When you visit Rovaniemi
and Lapland at this time of year, you get a chance to experience the landscape
in a completely different light – pun intended!
Unlike the dark winter months that Lapland is well known for, summer brings long, bright evenings and nights that never truly become dark. The forests, rivers and hills around Rovaniemi stay illuminated well all night long, creating ideal conditions for exploring nature, enjoying the outdoors and capturing photographs under soft northern light. Fancy a mountain bike ride at 02:00AM? No problem! Going trail running? You won’t trip on roots here in the summer! Or maybe you would rather be fishing – in summertime Rovaniemi you can do it all!
One of the best ways to experience the snowless season in Rovaniemi is by joining a Beyond Arctic photography guide on an evening photography tour that takes you away from the city centre and into some of the most scenic locations around Rovaniemi.
Our Midnight Sun Photography Tour begins in the evening as we leave the city behind and head towards the river landscapes that define our hometown, especially in the summertime. Our first stop is a small island called Koivusaari, located at the meeting point of the Kemijoki and Ounasjoki rivers. Surrounded by water and forest, the island offers a peaceful setting where visitors can slow down and take in the atmosphere of an early summer night in Lapland. Look carefully, and you may see some of the island’s summer residents – a flock oh sheep calmly grazing in the tall grass near the riverbanks.
Wooden duckboards wind through the island’s wetlands and forests, making it easy to explore while protecting the natural environment. Along the route, there are plenty of opportunities to photograph reflections on the water, wildflowers in bloom, the soft colours of the sky and the surrounding riverside scenery. During June, the vegetation in Rovaniemi is at its freshest, and the combination of greenery, water and evening light creates a landscape that changes subtly from hour to hour. And it makes for great photo souvenirs! A curated package of edited photos is included in all Beyond Arctic activities in Rovaniemi.
Although the Midnight Sun season is most often associated with continuous daylight (even in the night), the most interesting moments frequently happen when the sun moves close to the horizon. The low angle of the light creates warm tones and gentle contrasts that are especially rewarding for photography.
Our professional photography guides help guests make the most of these conditions by sharing practical tips on camera settings, composition and working with changing light. Whether you are using a professional camera, a compact camera or simply your smartphone, there are plenty of opportunities to improve your photography skills while enjoying the scenery.
After exploring the island, the tour continues to a nearby hill overlooking the river valley. Here, tucked among the forest at the end of a short, easy hike, is Kuninkaanlaavu, a traditional Finnish lean-to shelter that serves as the perfect place to spend the rest of the evening.
Kuninkaanlaavu is well known among locals for its views across the surrounding landscape. From the shelter, we can watch the sun slowly approach the horizon while the rivers below reflect the colours of the sky. Even though the sun remains above the horizon during the Rovaniemi Midnight Sun season, the changing light creates an atmosphere that feels remarkably different from daytime.
A campfire is prepared at the shelter whenever conditions allow, providing a warm gathering point where you can relax and enjoy a selection of barbecue snacks. Sitting around the fire, listening to the sounds of the forest and watching the landscape bathed in evening light is one of the highlights of the tour.
These moments also offer an opportunity to learn more about life in Lapland during the summer months, as your guide shares stories and facts. While winter tourism often receives much of the attention, summer is equally important to local people – if not more so. Hiking, fishing, berry picking and spending time outdoors become central parts of everyday life when the long, bright season finally arrives.
As midnight approaches, many first-time visitors are surprised by how bright it remains. Shadows grow softer and colours become more subtle, but darkness never fully arrives. The experience challenges many people’s expectations of what a night should look like and leaves a lasting impression long after the trip has ended.
The Midnight Sun itself officially lasts in Rovaniemi from early June to early July. However, the beautiful evening light continues well beyond this period. Throughout July and into August, sunsets become gradually more pronounced while still providing excellent opportunities for landscape photography and outdoor adventures.
If you are planning a trip to Lapland during the summer (and you should!), the Midnight Sun Photography Tour offers a chance to see a different side of the Arctic. Combining riverside walks, local nature, photography guidance and an evening around a campfire, it is an experience that highlights the most enjoyable and most local aspects of the season.
As the Midnight Sun returns to Rovaniemi once again, the forests, rivers and hills of Lapland invite you to stay outdoors a little longer, enjoy the light and experience the unique rhythm of the northern summer.
For travellers interested in experiencing the Nightless Night for themselves, the Midnight Sun Photography Tour operates daily from 1 June to 11 August. The tour starts at 21:30 and lasts approximately 3–4 hours, allowing you to enjoy the best evening light and explore carefully selected locations around Rovaniemi.
The experience is suitable for all ages and is family-friendly, making it a great option for couples, families and solo travellers alike. Groups are small, with a maximum of 8 participants, which means you get a more personal experience and plenty of opportunities to ask questions and receive photography tips throughout the evening.
The tour includes hotel pick-up and drop-off in Rovaniemi, transportation by minivan, a professional photography guide, barbecue snacks by the campfire, and useful outdoor equipment such as mosquito nets, repellent and barbecue gear when needed. You will also receive access to a collection of professionally edited photographs from the tour, available for download afterwards through Beyond Arctic’s online gallery: gallery.beyondarctic.com
Priced at 120 € for adults and 85 € for children aged 4–12, the tour combines photography, local nature and a relaxed summer evening outdoors. Whether your goal is to improve your photography skills or simply enjoy the unique atmosphere of Lapland under the Midnight Sun, it offers a memorable way to experience the season.
