Review of The Northern Lights Season 2022-2023

The 2022-2023 northern lights season was a truly memorable one, as the Sun's activity continued to intensify, moving closer to the solar maximum in 2025. This increase in solar activity gifted us with better than average aurora displays, creating breathtaking experiences for both locals and visitors alike. Let's take a look at what happened during the exciting season with the northern lights.

This Northern Lights season offered countless unforgettable nights and
let us highlight a few of these that remain in our memories for years to
come.

March 23rd shocked people around the world as the activity increased to record levels during the late March. The night demonstrated how a perfect night with northern lights would look like. Many people consider the spring equinox to be the best time of the year to see the Northern Lights and this night was clear evidence for it. The special element of the night were all the Northern Light colors appearing (green, purple, red and blue).

Activity: Geomagnetic Storm Level 3
Weather: Clear sky
Darkness: Optimal after 22:00

February 28th was a night that looked very difficult from the beginning. Rovaniemi was under heavy clouds and there was no certainty if the situation would improve. We still took our chance and drove close to Sweden where the sky magically opened up. The moment when the sky exploded with dancing northern lights was truly fantastic. One of the guests revealed that they were about to cancel their trip, because they thought the chances were minimal. It is needless to say that they were extremely happy that they didn’t cancel the tour.

Activity: Good values
Weather: Difficult
Darkness: 66% Moon

October 22nd showed the true beauty of the autumn northern lights. Standing on the riverside and watching the northern lights reflect from the riverside looked absolutely stunning. The red northern lights appeared visible to the naked eye and the last time this had happened was over eight years ago. The grand finale was the whole sky exploding for about 10 minutes close to midnight.

Activity: Geomagnetic Storm Level 2
Weather: Clear sky
Darkness: Perfect

These record nights showcased the stunning beauty and power of the northern lights, leaving a lasting impression on all who were lucky enough to witness them.

Despite the incredible northern lights displays, this season was not without its challenges. Persistent cloud cover made it difficult to spot the auroras on countless nights. Our dedicated team drove across Lapland in search of clear skies, even when it seemed like an impossible task. Through perseverance and determination, we were often able to find the perfect spots to view the dancing lights.
